personally I would leave it as "references available upon request" and that way if and when they ask your for them you can explain the cirucmstances and see what exactly they want.

I agree with Bonnie, A few of my references are out of town or country so it was much easier to just put that. Some employers will ask others will just look up your experience and just call. Good luck...
